Programs & Services
In addition to our emergency relief and food programs, we also offer the following programs in support to people who are experiencing personal and financial difficulties.
Needle and Syringe Program
Our needle exchange service is part of the harm minimisation program of the Victorian State Government and is the only such program in the Mornington area. The Victorian Needle and Syringe Program is a public health initiative that aims to minimise the spread of blood-borne viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B and C among people who inject drugs and in the wider community. Clients are able to receive clean equipment at no charge and return used needles and syringes for safe disposal.
The Needle and Syringe Exchange is open Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm.
There is no Needle Exchange Service on weekends.
In partnership with Cockatoo and Hills NILS we are able to provide access to the Good Shepherd Micro Finance No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS). The No Interest Loan Scheme provides safe, fair and affordable loans for people on low incomes. We operate as the Client Service Provider, promoting the scheme and conducting the initial loan interviews, gathering the necessary information and authorities and submitting the application to our partners at The Cockatoo and Hills NILS, as Loan Providers, for assessment and hopefully, approval.
Loans can be issued for up to $1,500 with no minimum amount and clients can have 2 loans at once, providing this amount is not exceeded and repayments are deemed manageable. Loans can be used for essential goods and services including household items, medical and dental services, education essentials and car repairs and registration.

Tax Help is a free service offered to low income earners (up to $60,000 pa) by the Australian Tax Office through a team of ATO trained volunteers. It provides tax advice and online lodgement of personal tax returns for most individual taxpayers (certain eligibility criteria apply). It is free and confidential and available from late July to 31 October each year.

In partnership with Casey North Community Information and Support Service and with funding from DSS, we offer access to a Financial Counsellor, one day a week from the Centre.
The program aims to help people in personal financial difficulty to address their financial problems, manage their debt and make informed choices about their money in the future. We expect the range of services to include direct casework, advocacy, referral and community education.

Community High Tea
We host a number of Community High Teas each year, for local people who are socially isolated, have insufficient funds to attend social functions or don’t have connections within their local community, in particular for those who live on their own or are new to the area. Our meeting room is decorated and furnished and food is provided in the style of a High Tea.

Community Health Nurse
In partnership with Mi (Mobile Integrated) Health we offer access to a Community Health Nurse in the Centre, once a fortnight. MI Health is a program of Peninsula Health that aims to improve and maintain the health status and quality of life for people who are homeless or people living in insecure accommodation. The Community Health Nurse will be able to discuss people’s health needs and assist them with a health assessment, access to dental services, allied and mental health referrals, and assistance with addictions, to name a few.

Volunteering Information Hub
We are working with Mornington Peninsula Shire, as part of a broader approach to volunteering across the Peninsula, called “Volunteering Mornington Peninsula”. This approach recognises that volunteering is an essential part of community life on the Peninsula and that many of our charities and community groups could not provide services or run activities without the support of volunteers. It recognises that volunteers also benefit from the experience of giving something back through a sense of accomplishment, personal growth, recognition, learning, skills and work experience and most of all, making a difference.
The aim of the Hub is to provide information about volunteering opportunities across the Peninsula.
The Hub is supported by the website www.volmornpen.com.au, where organisations can list volunteering opportunities and prospective volunteers can search for volunteering vacancies.
The Hub is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and no appointments are necessary.
The Mornington Community Christmas Lunch is held at the Senior Citizens Hall on Christmas Day, from 12pm to 2pm, for local residents (adults only) who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day. It has been running for seventeen years, and it continues to be a success due to the kindness of volunteers, local businesses, and organisations providing invaluable support. Lunch is provided free of charge to those attending.
We auspice the lunch and it is sponsored by Mornington Peninsula Shire (Delivered Meals provide the lunch), Mt Martha Community Bank, and Functioning Together (event planning).
Bookings for guests are essential and they commence in September through the Centre.
Free Wi-Fi and Internet
We provide free access to a public computer and the internet. Limited printing can also be arranged.
We also provide free access to Wi-Fi throughout the Centre.
Meeting Room Hire
Our interview rooms and meeting room are available for hire for meetings, conferences and seminars etc.
Our interview rooms (3) accommodate up to 6 people and are available for short and long term hire, during office hours only. Each room includes a table, chairs, a computer and phone.
The Helen Hendrey Room seats up to 100 people and is available seven days a week. The meeting room is not, however, available for social functions.

In partnership with Share the Dignity, we provide a #Pinkbox Dignity Vending Machine, that dispenses a FREE pack of 6 tampons and 2 pads on demand. Each machine is programmed with a delivery delay of 10 minutes to ensure that no period packs are wasted. Our machine is located in the women’s toilet at the front of the Centre.
